The Twin Falls District Fire and Aviation Program is proud of our aggressive fuels program, which is one of the largest in the entire Bureau of Land Management. Fuels employees are often working towards a degree in natural resources.
Fuels is the division of our organization that looks at the health of the land and tries to minimize the potential for fire in areas that are particularly likely to burn or are neighboring private property that would be threatened in the instance of a wildfire. Our fuels program is known for setting and achieving big goals, treating 30,000- 60,000 acres annually.
Variety of fuel types in which we do treatments:
Sagebrush Steppe
Annual Grasslands
Juniper Woodlands
Aspen
Douglas-fir
Mt. Mahogany
Variety of fuel treatments, including:
Chemical applications
Drill Seedings
Harrowings
Chainsaw thinning
Commercial thinning
Hand Plantings
Prescribed Fire
Fuels personnel are involved in a wide variety of tasks and get to see the most beautiful and remote areas of south central Idaho. We generally offer project work prior to and after the main fire season, as well as other opportunities for vegetation inventory, treatment monitoring, GIS assignments, and resource work.
