Local Recreation

Firefighting is a great way to start a career with the Federal Government. It provides an entry level job in the government, which allows you to get to know what opportunities are available. A large majority of BLM resource and fire managers--those who make the decisions at the local, state and national levels--began their careers as wildland firefighters.

Working on an engine your first year can help you gain the needed experience in order to apply to smoke jumping, hot shot crews and helitack. Firefighters from our program have gone on to work in law enforcement, recreation, resource management and city fire departments. Here is some information of what you can expect (PDF, free download information below) as a first year firefighter working for the BLM.

We offer several fire courses each spring to help train firefighters, improve skills and create opportunities for job advancement. Fire courses are offered through Eastern Idaho Technical College hosted by Eastern Idaho Interagency Fire Center. All instructors are local firefighters.

A first year firefighter can expect to receive the following training:

S-110 (Basic Wildland Fire Orientation)
S-130 (Firefighter Training)

I-100 (Introduction to Incident Command System)
